    • Airbus A321
    • Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner

Infinite Flight 1.1 for iOS

It's been a little less than a week since Infinite Flight 1.0 was approved by Apple. During this time we've worked hard to bring support for the new iPad. We also took this opportunity to fix some of the issues that our users had reported to us.

Infinite Flight 1.1 brings the following features:

  • New airplane: F/A-18!
  • iPad3 Retina Display support (running at native resolution 2048x1536)
  • Scrollbars on listboxes
  • Fixed initial listbox position in aircraft page (A380 not hidden anymore)
  • Increased the message time in the tutorial

Most of the reviews we've read were mentioning the lack of content. We're working on it, we will try to add new airplanes with each update.
We're already hard at work on the next one, which will bring one or two new airplanes, fix the multitasking issues, the flight model...

We'd like to thank everyone who left reviews, for those of you who haven't, there is some negativity out there, we'd love your help ;-)

Press Release - Infinite Flight for iOS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Flying Development Studio LLC is announcing the release of Infinite Flight for iPhone/iPad

San Francisco, CA March 19th 2011 - Flying Development Studio LLC, the company behind Infinite Flight, the flight simulator for Windows Phone is pleased to announce their first iOS release.

Infinite Flight for iOS is a universal app that runs on iPhone 4 & 4s, iPad 1 & 2 and iPod Touch 4th Generation (iPad3 support is coming soon). All the features that are already present in Infinite Flight 2.2 are available in this new release. However, due to problems encountered during certification, some airplanes are missing from the initial release. They will make it into the simulator very soon. Priced at $4.99, this release include 5 aircrafts, realistic physics simulation, heads up display, autopilot, 2 regions with 140+ airports, time of day, configurable weather settings, a beginner tutorial, logbook and more.

It can be downloaded today on the app store at the following location:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/infinite-flight/id471341991?ls=1&mt=8

To accomplish this port to iOS, Flying Development Studio used MonoTouch and a custom branch of the open source project MonoGame to which they added OpenGL ES 3D support.

A video showing the latest version in action on an iPad2 can be viewed at the link below:

Infinite Flight for iOS available now in the Apple Store

After many weeks wrestling with the Apple Store submission process, Infinite Flight for iOS finally hits the shelves and is now available for everybody with an iDevice to enjoy !

Following a couple of problems with the App Store approval, we had to temporally disable the networking capabilities of Infinite Flight. This means that user accounts as well as In App purchases are not yet available.
Be sure that we are hard at work to resolve those issues and will update as soon as possible; we wanted to have a first version out of the door so we can get more feedback and suggestions and therefore improve Infinite Flight based on what our users want.

Here is the list of features included in this first version.
  • 5 Airplanes: Airbus A380-800, Boeing 737-800, Cessna 172SP, Cirrus SR22, Super Decathlon (More airplanes are coming, including the A321, F/A-18, CRJ200, C-17...)
  • 2 Regions: San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California (137 airports total)
  •  Flight Planning - Realistic Flight Model
  •  Introductory Flight Lesson (More to come)
  •  Autopilot (Altitude and Heading, Throttle)
  •  4 time presets (Sunrise, Day, Sunset and Night)
  •  Weather settings: Wind direction and intensity, visibility...
  •  Yoke helper for easy handling of the airplane
  •  Final Approach Path Display to help with landings
  •  ILS (Instrument Landing System)
  •  Realistic sounds
  •  5 Camera Modes
  •  Runway lights
  •  Automatic Logbook (entries added for each flight)
  •  Achievements
We have published two videos showing the game in action:

And here is a video of the airplanes that are coming:

As usual you can follow us on Facebook and Twitter to get the latest updates on the progress of the Infinite Flight.

Infinite Flight 2.2 for Windows Phone

The iOS certification mess gave us some time to work on the Windows Phone version of Infinite Flight a bit earlier than we anticipated. We're happy to announce that we've pushed it to Microsoft for certification today.

Here is the list of features:

- Added the Airbus 321 (US Airways Livery, our most detailed model yet!)
- Fixed issues with airplane going under the terrain in certain situations
- Better runway lighting
- Lots of performance improvements
- New user account system (to keep scores, flight time and user data across devices)

Compared to our previous updates, this one is pretty lean. The main reason behind this is that we spent a lot of time working on the iOS version. Fortunately, it brought a lot of improvements over to the Windows Phone version of Infinite Flight!
The most noticeable one is the frame rate. This is a side effect of the optimizations we had to implement in order to reach a decent frame rate on the iPod Touch and iPhone 4 (Slow A4 Processor).
Some of the optimizations were on pure iOS code, but many were in the code that is shared by both platforms. This won't make much of a difference on last generation Windows Phones (HTC Titan, Nokia Lumia's, etc...) but those of you using older generation Windows Phones will see a big change!

Keep your eyes open for 2.2 as we expect an answer from Microsoft during the week.

Update #2 on Infinite Flight for iOS

Infinite Flight for iOS got rejected again last friday again, and for the same reason. We got more information from Apple this time around but we still can't figure out what is causing the crash. None of our testers have been able to reproduce the issue, it happens only on Wifi and not in Airplane Mode or even 3G... Really odd...

At this point, we have two options, either we proceed by elimination to try and figure out what could be causing the problem, (with a 1 week turn around for each attempt), or we simply cut out anything that is related to networking for the initial release.

Since we really want to get the product in the hands of the public, we decided to take drastic measures. The initial release of Infinite Flight will not have any networking capabilities. This means that In App Purchases will be disabled and only a handful of airplanes will be available until we figure out what's going on with this crash.

If we can't find a solution in an acceptable time frame, we'll see how to proceed from there so the iOS users aren't too impacted by this problem.

We really appreciate all the support we've received during these 2 weeks while waiting for certification and we can't wait to get everyone to try Infinite Flight!

Happy Landings

Update on Infinite Flight for iOS

As some of you have heard, Infinite Flight has reached the RTM stage. We sent a build last week, unfortunately, it was rejected by Apple due to a mystery crash that none of our great beta testers could reproduce at all.

We're not sure what is the cause of the crash yet, we had some guesses and tried to address the potential issues in a new build that we posted this morning.

Keep an eye on our Facebook or Twitter feeds for updates on the release.

In the meantime, since we have a week until the verdict, we'll go ahead and start the beta testing period of Infinite Flight 2.2 for Windows Phone.

Infinite Flight at AltDevConf

The organizers of AltDevConf have posted the recording of our talk on Cross Platform Development in C# presented in collaboration with Miguel de Icaza.

The talk is divided in two parts, the first about Mono and Mono Touch by Miguel and the second about the port of Infinite Flight from Windows Phone 7 to iOS using the libraries and tools presented by Miguel.

Here is the video:
